  1. you have to go through fcc license procedure and have about 500k for transmitters, towers, etc. don't forget insurance on towers etc. your going to need a advertising force remember you have to continue to pay you electric bills, hell that's just the start best you go to school and work the collage radio station and learn the biz first good luck .
  2. You will need to apply for a license with the FCC (if in the US) and it is a costly and lengthy procedure. If you wanted to have a low power station that would only be heard in your neighborhood you could probably do so for several thousand dollars. A 'real' broadcast station would cost in the millions to buy or build. Look into local schools, colleges or some communities have non-profit stations or cable access where you can learn more and get experience.
  3. In addition to the 2 excellent answers above^, be sure and set aside a good hunk of change for royalty payments. You will be required to pay a royalty to every artist for each song you play. Better get a whole lot of advertisers lined up to pay all the bills! Anyway, good luck following your "dream"!
  4. First thing you need to do is register with the FCC's COmmission REgistration System (CORES). After that you'll need to file the proper licensing forms with the FCC's Media Bureau, which is responsible for all radio and television stations broadcasting over 250watts. Next comes either buying or leasing a radio tower. I would probably either try to buy one all ready in you area or lease one. Now you got to buy or lease all of you equipment to run the station and a music library to get you started. For a modern rock station there are 3 types of music you need, New, Standard, and Gold....example: Velvet Revolver- She Builds Quick Machines (new), System of a Down- B.Y.O.B (standard), Metallica-Master of Puppets (gold) You'll also nee a sales staff to help generate revenue and an on-air staff. Try looking into to nationally syndicated morning shows to buy as they will draw your biggest audience initially and generate your highest commercial fees. Next just wait for the Arbitron ratings to come out and see how you did. I'm a radio DJ in Fargo.
