I want to find internet radios with the best indie rock and pop? Can you tell me where can I find free internet radio streaming with the best indie rock and pop bands from USA and UK such as Friendly Fires, Foster The People, Cut Copy, Drums, Ivy, Phoenix, Naked And Famous, Rogue Wave, M83, Etc. What are your favorite rock radio stations? http://www.strutterradio.com/ That's the only one I'll listen to. Me being a KISS fan and all, its nice to have one giant playlist that streams the songs all day. Its great to listen to when I'm at work, and pretty handy. Whenever I feel like listening to a certain song, I don't even need to pull out the necessary album, I can just request it.
Does online radio streaming have what's really on the car's radio? I am listening to 95.1 WIIL Rock with an online stream.... so does the real radio have the stuff playing at the same time.
Why are UK internet users being denighed streaming of US Radio stations Now? for the last 2 years I been listening to New York's WPLJ95.5 and San Francisco's Alice 97.3 . As I love the American contemporary pop and rock they play, compared to the British music. Now The Feds are blocking outside transmission, This is 21st Century and and internet access should be improved not restricted, does anyone know whats going on...Luckily there are smaller radio stations in America still not switched off for international users, I found one I listen to.
Your help needed! What would draw you to our brand of rock talk radio? We are a rock music talk show that airs on radio and streams online. We'd like to know from you, the fans, what would draw you to our show and make you listen live? Would it be the guest whom we're interviewing? Would it be a segment about your local rock clubs? What would be the draw? We're looking for new avenues to explore and who better to ask than our own listeners, as well as people that aren't currently listeners. Any responses would greatly be appreciated. (you can also contact us by visiting our site and clicking on the Live Chat banner at the bottom of our home page). We want to hear from YOU! Thank you.

What sort of bands does the BBC 6 Music radio station play? Please give examples of bands not genres.? Please give 7 or 8 examples of bands not just a genre (e.g. "Radiohead, The Beatles" etc. NOT "jazz" or "rock".) (And I can't just tune into 6 Music because I don't have a radio so streaming media i.e. radio is blocked) Thanks
every one is hating on main stream rock music now days? Seems like all of my friends love to rip on radio played hits. I have no problem with bands such as the Decemberists, Modest Mouse, Black Keys or whatever other garage band that nobody has ever heard.I think every one forgets each decade has there pluses and minuses. My favorite band (pearl jam) probably had a few flop songs.
how can I get a Finnish radio station to stream on ITunes? Are there any Finnish Radio stations that I can get on ITunes?(preferably rock stations) how do I get them on ITunes?
I'm looking for a radio station with streaming audio? That plays less edgy alternative rock, like Ben Folds Five, Counting Crows, Jason Mraz, Cake, Elvis Costello, Cowboy Junkies, Jack Johnson, The fray, Goo Goo dolls, Green Day, Guster, Ben Harper, The Killers. They don't play this stuff on the radio where I live.....I miss BOSTON. Yes I have playlists and listen to Pandora, but I also want actual radio stations to listen to too when I'm at work on my computer. Thanks!!!
Do you believe internet radio will die May 15th 2007? The Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC has more than tripled the royalty rates for webcasters. This means that most internet streaming radio stations in the US and Canada will no longer be able to afford broadcasting their programs. Do you think this is fair considering the fact that commercial radio stations pay nothing to play their songs? Isn't playing a song on internet radio or commercial radio promoting the song? Is this fair that Clear Channel, which controls most of the music heard on the FM dial, gets away without paying anything. Are we going to be stuck listening to Justin Timerlake, Beyonce, or Bow-wow songs. Are we destined to hear the same 50 tired old classic rock songs? Will we never get to hear College rock, Ska, Garage, Eurodance, Big Band, Reggae or any of the hundreds of other formats available on internet radio? Do you like internet radio, commercial radio or satellite?
How can i stream a japanese radio station live? i wish to stream a japanese radio station live. is there a way or place that i can do this? i would prefer it to be rock music or pop btw. i finally founded one i like. only thing is that it slows with the more programs i use but if u have a computer that is decent at all give it a shot. here is the link. http://www.bigbradio.com its j-pop tho. no rock.
Whats a good place to find streaming music online while at work? My work has a firewall that blocks many websites, including shoutcast, yahoo launch, rhapsody, and most of the "major" online distributors. I've found that direct links that can be loaded in winamp usually work (like from the local radio station, www.radiostation.com/listen.pls). I'm looking for ROCK music only please. www.woxy.com works perfectly, except the music sucks. Is there a website that lists direct streams? Or does anybody know of any? And yes I googled/ask.com/chacha/yahoo searched for a long time, and found few that worked, and those that do are usually very weird or some unpopular style. THANKS!
Where can I keep updated on current Hard Rock/Alternative Metal? I recently moved to the Seattle area and so far, the rock radio station's I've heard seem to play a combination grunge, alternative rock, emo, and cookie monster metal. I'm more interested in music similiar to Tool, 10 Years, Chevelle, Ashes Divide, and Five Finger Death Punch if that helps. Is there some sort of blog that I can follow, website to visit, or a great radio station either in the Seattle area, a streaming station on the internet, or maybe even some great venues in the Seattle area that I can check out to bring myself to this type of music I so endure. Thanks!
Where can I find a free online radio stream of early 90's alternative music? I want to hear bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Blind Melon, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. I definitely do not want to hear 80's music. And no "hard-rock" alternative like Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc. And this is asking for a miracle, but one with no U2! (OK, I will settle for U2 if you can find me one with the other bands listed...if I HAVE to.) It can either be from one of those websites with thousands of free streams, or from your local radio station that offers a free stream. Do you know where I could find this? My sanity thanks you! OK, I learned my lesson, and should have been more specific. I KNOW where to go to get the streams, but can't seem to find the right station. My question was for the SPECIFIC station.
i want to upgrade the lousy stock radio in my truck? the thing is, I don't know much about car audio. where do I start? the speakers or the radio? how do I know which speakers are right for me? what specs do I look at and what should they be? what specs do I look for on the radio and what should they be? how do I know the radio and speakers are right for each other? do I need an amp or I can get decent sound without it? things to keep in mind; 1. I am over 35 but I hear well so I don't need a system you can hear miles away. it's just that the one i have now, at max volume, is so quiet that you can talk over it without raising your voice. plus i want to get into HD radio. 2. I listen to mostly main stream rock, the beatles, stones, boston, van halen, zeppelin etc. and I also listen to blues, jazz and some classical. my point being, that I don't need any crazy bass just enough but the high end is really important. 3. I am looking to stay within a budget. I am not looking for the k-mart special but the total cost of the system should be less than the cost of the truck....well, let's just say under $1,000 4. I am not against any remodeling of the truck but the system would preferably fit in the same space as the radio and 4 speakers i have now. 5. recommending specific brands and models is OK but, i am really looking for general info so that I can look around and find the right system myself and be sure I know what I'm getting. 6. I drive a 2000 dodge dakota 4 door just in case that makes any difference. thanks.
How can I record or capture audio? How can I "capture" the audio (any audio) that is enamting from the speakers (sound card) of my pc? For instance: If I'm listening to an audio stream of a church sermon or a favorite classic rock radio station in Anchorage Alaska - how do I record it? Can I do with with any common playing software like Media Player or Real Audio?
Good radio station to stream online? I like listening to metal mostly. Some rock. Newer music though. The only radio station I can stream online also plays classic rock like Van halen or AC/DC etc. Which I don't care for. My father listened to that..not my thing. Anyways, does anyone know of a radio station or other way to play music over my internet connection that fits these specifications? Thanks. :D
What's the best radio station in the UK/Ireland to stream? I like: jazz, blues, general contemporary music (Paolo Nutini, Take That etc) I do not like: hip-hop, rave etc, rock, punk etc, R&B.
How can i stream a Japanese radio station live? I want to stream a japanese radio station live. preferably rock or pop. is there a place that i can go to stream some fairly recent stuff live from japan? im looking for something that is actually based in japan. not an american group playing popular japanese songs. but i tried hanami and almost got one. but then my WMP failed to play it. T^T i found one online. its j-pop tho. no rock. but i am still impressed with the quality. here is the link: http://www.bigbradio.com give it a try
Favorite radio station with online broadcast? I want some more variety in the stations I listen to at work. Can anyone suggest a few new ones that offer audio streams? Most radio stations are owned by the same company, so I'm especially like to find more independant stations or ones that played a lot of their local music. I prefer rock over rap or country. Er...funlovingacrobat, you know that online you can listen to radio stations all over the world... right? It doesn't matter what country you live in! :)
What US radio stations can I listen to online from Ireland? I was looking for stations in any US state that plays popular/rock/punk/alternative music, and maybe some ones that have lots of chat and talking etc.? (Or what do you guys listen to?) Ones that can be streamed live online please! Even just lists would do, and I can see which ones are available in Ireland then myself! Thanks for reading!
Good internet radio station for small business? Hey guys, We're opening an asian themed restaurant in Chicago, and we're looking for a decent internet radio station that we can stream for our customers. Our demographic is about 60 % women and 40 % men. Average household income is about 100,000. The location is near downtown Chicago. We would like something that is contemporary, hip with a mix of various styles ranging from hip-hop, jazz, pop, rock, etc..... Any suggestions? Thanks, Pete
what is this song called..? It sounds like it's by the Ting Tings (female singer with a bluntish voice) but I checked and it's not. All I know is on the chorus it has this part that goes.. "Ah- ah -ah -ah" I know not much to go on, but it's in a lot of movies and I heard it on a soft-rock/main stream radio station... Also the "Ah-ah -ah -ah" were studdering not like screaming or anything. I'll take any suggestions. Thank you!!! <3 xxHarlow

Is there a good rock music stream that avoids songs about women, love, breakups, cheating, etc.? I usually listen to www.edge-radio.net, but since my soon to be ex-girlfriend started playing games, I realized that half of the songs seem to be about women. This girl has me so frustrated that every time a song comes on about being cheated on, breaking up, or being messed-over, I simply can't concentrate on what I'm supposed to be doing at the time. I suppose that rock has been quite influenced by members of the opposite sex, but it would be nice to leave those songs out, at least until things get back to normal. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Mixed rock playlist to play at work? The morning shows on all the radio stations have finally pushed my boss, my co-workers and myself to the edge. So I am constructing a playlist to put on my iPod, I am looking for classic, 60's 70's 80's 90's and current rock music. nothing too crazy just the average main stream type stuff. Thanks in advance
What is it about Canadian rock bands? Ever since finding Q107's online radio stream, I've been blown away at the kind of stuff that I never got much of a chance to hear down in the States. Since listening, I've added a lot of April Wine, Colin James, Jeff Healey, Kim Mitchell/Max Webster, Rush (the big songs were in there--more has been added), The Tragically Hip, etc. Why is it that even though Canadian acts seem to kick @$$ better musically than a lot of the stuff in the States, you never hear the stuff on the radio south of the border?
What's a good Blackberry app for STREAMING audio like shoutcast, live365, Sky.fm, DI.fm, etc? I just got an 8830 with unlimited internet, and I don't see an option for playing internet radio. Anyone know of a good app for this? I used to use gplayer with my dell axim and it rocked, but that was an arm based pocketpc.
On which AOL Radio Station am I most likely to hear Crystal Method? Not only Crystal Method, but Prodigy and Chemical Brothers. I'm looking for that more aggressive, rock-like break beat. So far, none of the dance stations seem to have very much of the techno I like. More accurately, it has some good stuff, and alot of bad stuff. I'm partial to AOL Radio, but I suppose if there is a another good streaming site, I'd give it a try if it really fits the bill. Thanks.
What is the best cell phone for me on the AT&T network? What are people's experiences? I had a Treo 650 which was OK, but it was bulky, slow on the edge network and there were some little quirks with Palm applications. I now have a Treo 750. It's cool but Windows Mobile is not entirely stable. I have to reboot frequently. The web browser is just OK, not everything works, but enough does to make it workable. It's a lousy phone though. The call quality is adequate, but half the time it doesn't ring or I answer and it just hangs up. Is there anything out there that truly rocks? Don't just say iPhone without any data to back it up. I'm not sure an iPhone would suit my needs. My needs are: 1) Good phone quality 2) reliable email and web browsing plus some PDA capabilities. 3) the ability to use a blue tooth headset and play music through it. 4) the ability to play mp3s and stream radio 5) Not having to reboot the phone on a regular basis because some features simply stop working. 6) a camera 7) The ability to use the phone as a modem for my laptop.
POLL: Should there be a punk rock/alternative radio station in MINNEAPOLIS MINNESOTA? I travel a lot and i find that other states and cities have punk rock radio stations and alternative...yet in my home in minnesota i have never heard a radio station play anything from the ramones to the sex pistols to nirvana to sum 41 or anything! We don't even have GREEN DAY and they are quiiite main stream (their older music was a million times better) Should we get this station or not? Or is a better idea to have 2 different top 40 stations like we do now?
Do you listen to '80s alternative or modern rock? Now this was the music that I grew up to (b. 1978). If this were "alternative" to something, it could be those glam-rock hair bands. Examples are Depeche Mode, New Order, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Smiths, Velvet Underground, etc. & I think in the '90s, assuming that Nirvana, Pearl Jam, & Soundgarden got tiresome (still regularly played on Krab Radio here in Bakersfield), I think such alt. rock artists were Erasure, Feeder, Urge Overkill, Tori Amos, etc. +, WOXY.com has one streaming audio channel called WOXY Vintage. R.E.M & Radiohead are also good examples but that's only if you exclude any "greatest hits" that get ruined by constant radio airplay. I'd like 2 hear from some musicophiles who are fans of this type of modern rock that's been around for 2½ decades.
Radio Station with surfer's music? Does anybody know a good radio station with live stream in the internet (for example from California) that plays surfing music (Rock, Jack Johnson...) and has news and perhaps short reports? I want to have that "summer feeling"...
What radio station is this, by Durant, OK - 91.9 FM (and south down to about Sherman)? I was working in Durant, OK today and I was listening to a rock station on 91.9 fm. I didn't hear any commercials, and I think they called it "Power 92". I can't receive the station locally, and I can't find it on the internet. Does anyone know what station it is and if they stream on the net? Thanks!
any good online radio stations? I like to listen to the raido when i go to bed and sleep. I tryd to find some sites to listen to music on, i like rock, not classic rock i really like modern day stuff any modern day music really, does anyone know any good stations i can listen to streaming live on the internet?
Anybody know of high bitrate (over 192 kbps) internet radio stations? I would be fine with paying a subscription fee but I would like a stream at higher quality than 192 kbps. The higher the better. I like indy rock and jazz mostly.
Internet Radio on LG VU and AT&T? I would like to listen to free streaming rock radio on my LG VU from AT&T. The LG VU runs Java programs and I dont know what is a station that is good, and works well on the phone. Please help! I am getting bored at work!
Jed the Fish radio show Out of Order? Jed the Fish hosts a nationally syndicated radio show called "Out of Order". It used to be played on my local radio station in Raleigh, North Carolina, 96 rock, but it isn't anymore as far as I know. Is there somewhere online where this is streamed? Or is there any site where the shows are recorded and available for download?
Fair, or childish?...? Last night my neighbours were 'nice and loud' whilst I tried to sleep. So, 6:30am this morn, I treated them to a live stream of Radio 6's Rock Show with Bruce Dickinson.... Fair game, or nursery school?
good songs?indie, punk, rock? i love punk, rock and indie alot. i'm not into main stream music cause i listen to it all the time on the radio. some of my fave bands are death cab maroon 5 oasis die mannequin metric do u know any songs that i may like? or even bands? thanks
I'm looking for a radio station that plays...? Music [techo/dance] rock and popish stuff like arctic monkeys, cobra starship, Motion City, atreyu, cash cash, katy perry, metro station and some more acoustic things like plain white ts. NOT really like Brittney, pink, etc. Doesn't matter where the station is, you can usually stream online
What are some good Rock cover songs? Hey everyone. I’m a typical fan of rock and heavy metal. I love to listen to XM station “Squizz” and ever since I got Dish I’ve been listening to “Octain” on Sirius radio. Well a DJ on both stations is Bodhi and I love the music he plays. More recently I discovered I adore Rock and Heavy Metal covers of common pop songs…regardless as to if they are newer or older…though the newer ones tend to make me laugh more. My question for you is this: What rock covers do you know of pop/main stream songs? I have a list of the ones I know and already have. Now I don’t want songs that were once rock or pop and were re-done to be pop…so no Britney Spears “My Prerogative” or anything like that. Here is my list: Framing Hanley – “Lolipop” (Cover of Lil Wayne’s song…I’m addicted to it) Rivethead – “Sexy Back” (Cover of Justin’s song) Disturbed – “Land Of Confusion” Marilyn Mason – “Personal Jesus” Dope – “Spin Me Right Around” Korn – “Word Up” Marilyn Manson – “Sweet Dreams” Marilyn Manson – “This is Halloween” Hollywood Undead – “Hollaback Boy” Hollywood Undead – “Don’t Cha” (lmao…The Pussycat Dolls would flip over this one) Marilyn Manson – “Like a Virgin” Nonpoint – “In The Air Tonight” Limp Bizkit – “Behind Blue Eyes” Disturbed – “Shout 2000” Drowning Pool – “Rebel Yell” A random cover of another rock song would be Atreyu’s “Epic” And if you know any covers of Linkin Park songs could you tell me what they are and who they are by that would be kind of interesting.
Who was the greatest '90s Rock/Alternative Performer/Group? The 1990's were great years for rock. There was a real groundswell of progressive, experimental and challenging artists that managed to break through from indy into the main-stream of popular culture. Below is a list of nominees for the greatest performer/group of the 90s in rock & roll. If I missed someone, please feel free to write them in. (Some of these artists we big both before and after the 90's, but a majority of their best work was released during that decade.) Please, no POP or RAP. In no particular order: Pearl Jam R.E.M. Tori Amos Soundgarden Nirvana Red Hot Chili Peppers Smashing Pumpkins Alice in Chains Metallica Radio Head Bjork How could I have missed? Stone Temple Pilots Tool (Bush doesn't get a nomination... they aren't in the same league with these other bands.) Another one I missed: Pantera I considered the Foo fighters, but Nirvana was so much more prominent in the 90s, that I decided that the FFs didn't quite make the cut. And Oasis? Not a chance. Oasis sucks.
What is your favorite radio station? Do they stream online? I like Seattle's 107.7 The End. Alternative Rock. I know 99X in Atlanta is also a great station, although when I was there, the music seemed more mellow. Both of these stations stream online. Any other suggestions?
Looking for answers on music? ok, so i only listen to music where someone is actually playing an instrument like rock, metal, folk, but not country through. so i was wondering if you listen to anything like this if you could help me find new good bands, so if you could give me 1. your top three rock bands 2. your top three classic rock bands, and 3. your top three metal bands (and no nickleback isn't metal, i mean bands like parkway drive, as i lay dying, or as blood runs black) And i also don't like main stream radio crap, so since i'm so hard to please, i'll give 10 points for top answer, thanks for the help.
Can anyone help with "less popular" music from 1987 to 1989? To explain a little of what I mean... I was in high school during the years of 87 through 89. There were some songs I would absolutely LOVE to hear again from back in those days. The problem is, these songs apparently weren't even in the top 100. I know a lot of music is played in different areas of the U.S. People in Florida may hear music that isn't as popular in California, for example. I was living in Denver, Colorado during these years. The songs that I would like to find were played on regular, main stream radio stations that nearly everyone listened to back then. The songs I would like to find were played enough to be liked though! What I'm looking for would be considered Pop, Rock, and possibly R&B genres. I'm almost positive that most of what I'm looking for would be considered Pop (to tone the search down some more). My problem is, when I do a search on Google, I can only seem to find the MOST famous songs of those years. I've gotten a little lucky and found top 100. Those songs are way too popular in those top 100 lists. The songs I'm looking for were actually played pretty often, however. I would like to know if anyone knows where I can browse a list of less popular music during those years? There were a few songs that I would LOVE to hear again. The problem is, I wouldn't know the names of them until I saw them and/or heard them again. I am positive that even if I could see a list of the songs and/or artists from those years, it would FINALLY strike a lightbulb with me and I could go about purchasing the music. Thank you all for any suggestions you might have. :) Thank you SO much for your reply! I am working on another message to you and will get back with you shortly. Thanks a ton! :) I'll see if I can tone this down more and share more info for others as well in this area if it'll help. Thank you so much, as well, Fair Judgement :) I will certainly look through the sites you shared. The songs I'm wishing to find were possibly in the top 500 unfortunately. As the other reply said, they were less famous but still loved music by friends and family. Unfortunately they've been swallowed in a black hole of popularity and they're very difficult to find. Now that I have ability to download music, I'm just going through the years thinking "man there was that 1 song from the fall of 88 that I wish I could find! I don't remember the name but surely it will strike some memory if I see the name of it or the artist!" The songs I would like to find were played a lot in Denver but dangit if I can't even find a list. :/ I'm so sorry that I cannot even remember a specific verse with any type of clarity. It's just one of those things where if I heard it, I'd know RIGHT away and would never forget from that point on. :-/ I've been slowly going through the lists that Judgement shared with me. So far I've already found a few that I hadn't heard in forever! As I go through the list, I'll type the name of the song or artist into iTunes. Then I'll listen to the 30 seconds of it to see if it rings a bell. WOW! Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams There's an example of a song that was played a TON back in 88 and yet it isn't listed on any top 100. Maybe top 500? I would never have thought of that song on my own but now that I hear it, it's like WHOA! YES! So any lists any of you can find like this would be fantastic! Thanks again for the help guys! To my first responder, I did attempt to send you a 1 on 1 message. I HOPE you got it alright. Would it be possible for you to share a list of music you may have in your collection of songs from that area of years? I would love to see some of the ones you know of that were not in the top 100! :) AWESOME Maryanne! Thank you SOOO much! I will go through those for sure and see what I can find. Which website plays streaming audio ? I want to listen to latest Western Music (English) of rock /rap/pop genre. e.g. RHCP, U2, Hoobastank, Shakira "hips dont lie", etc. There is a website called raaga.com but it plays Indian languages only. Any website like this one? Most of these online radios suck big time. Please suggest some good website. I would like to line up songs and they should keep playing continuously and smoothly.
Does anyone know a song with the lyrics "give me a chance to remember" as the beginning of the chorus? I'm sorry I'm giving such little reference but I heard the song some months ago and that's all I could catch from the lyrics because I was distracted and was too sure I could find the name in the radio stream playlist I was listening to, but the name wasn't there due to an skipping error :( It's sort of a rock song, I suck at defining genres too, but I really hope someone can help me because I loved the song and I'm going crazy trying to find it.
Lets start a revolution and bring back good music? whos with me? todays main stream music s*cks! lets bring back 70's and 80's rock! so when we turn on the radio we dont have to turn the tune dial till our hands fall of finding ood music. see i dont get we way outnumber those kids and yet they still conroll the music an most thins popular?
Does anyone know the URL? I'm trying to find a working URL for an internet radio station.... Underground Music?!? Does anyone know any good UNDERGROUND Rock, punk, metal...etc bands??? No, Not main stream - what you hear on the radio - underground! If you do and there is a way for me to get ahold of there music please let me know how! That would ROCK!
Do you think most people should be aware of all the violence during yesterdays marches? While most of the Main Stream Media (MSM) is reporting that the illegal alien protests on May 1, 2007 were peaceful and benevolent, the truth is emerging as documented arrests from LA, Portland, NYC, and other locations come in. On May 1, many of the illegal alien protests had anarchists, communists, socialists, and radical illegal alien separatist groups in their ranks while American flags were dishonored and assaults on police and citizens occurred. The most notable incident was in Los Angeles in McArthur Park which is considered to be MS-13 gangland. At least 15 LAPD officers were assaulted and injured by rocks and bottles thrown by people in the crowds. The illegal alien supporters also set fires in the park. Most of the media coverage just shows the response actions of LAPD and NOT the deplorable actions of the illegal alien protesters. Please see the videos and LAPD open band radio recordings below. http://www.alipac.us/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=62230

This was the first zombie short story i have written? Dead Bodies Everywhere Chapter 1 The event that would occur on the morning of April third would be later named the rising of the dead. The first sightening of one of the "Zombies", as some people would later call them, was seen by a women named Laura Catherol at six thirty-six in the morning. But fifteen minutes before the first sightening was seen, Rick Stanley a man with no importance to the world really, came walking down the street in Fort Rock, Indiana. In one hand he held a bag with the words, EVERYTHING YOU NEED, written on the side. And in the other hand he held his ciggarete. He had been meaning to stop smoking but he just couldnt do it. That morning had been chilly but began to warmthin up later on. Rick was in town because he was shopping for something that his wife, Laura, would like. Inside the baggy with the words, EVERYTHING YOU NEED, written on the side was a small paperweight and a comic book. While he was out his thought he mine as well buy a spider-man comic for his thirteen year old son, Micheal. Thats when he heard the police siren. Rick straned his neck to turn and look at the potral car come speeding down the street. It flew by and made Rick's hair fly. The police car stopped down at a park and thats when Rick saw the ambulence pull up too. Rick started to walk faster towards the park to see what was going on. Rick then saw two men come out with a stretcher and pick a man who had a big gash in his neck up. Rick then put his hand to his mouth and gasped. There was so much blood he couldnt belive it. Then Rick saw a cop step out of his car and pull out his handgun. Thats when Rick started to walk faster towards the park. Rick was just about there when the cop yelled, "STOP GET ON THE GROUND SIR!" Then a pause and the cop shot his gun. Then another pause longer and Rick saw the cop tackle the person he had shot. That shot would injur any normal person, Rick thought when he finally got to the park. "Whats going on?" Rick asked a women who was next to him with her arms crossed and a disgusted look on her face. "Well that man there on the ground bit the man who went away in the ambulence in the neck. Almost tore the skin completly off", the women explained. "Why did he do it?" Rick asked. "I dont know I just saw the man run up and bite him for no reason. There was another call about a block from here about someone else who was bit" Then the man who the cop had shot suddenly jumped up and bit the cop in the back. The man swung his head back and completly tore the skin off the cops back. The cop screamed in pain and fell over. Then the man who had bit the cop looked up and saw Rick and the other women next to him. Thats when Rick heard lots of sirens. It sounded like twelve police cars were flying down the road at once. Then three police cars pulled up next to Rick and five cops stepped out of the cars and one of them yelled, "Everyone down!" Then he pulled up his gun and shot the man in the head. His face exploded and he fell to the ground. "WHAT THE HELL!" the women next to Rick yelled as the cop who was bit in the back jumped up and tackled her. Rick stepped sideways and yelled. The women tried to push him off but he was too strong. Then the cop bit her face and ripped off most of her cheek. She screamed and then the cop just still kept on chewing at her. Rick had to do something and he knew he did. So he brought back his hand with the bag in it and swung the paperweight at him. The paperwight hit the cop in the temple and he fell to the ground with a grunt. Then all five of the other cops started to fire and one of the bullets hit the screwed up Cops head and it exploded. Rick stepped back and looked at the cop. "Have you benn bitten young man?" one of the cops asked Rick. "No sir I havnt whats going on?" "We dont exactly know but we do know you need to get inside a refugee somewhere and stay save. And dont get bitten by these things" Rick took a step and then began to run. He car was only a block from here so once he got to there he could see what was going on. Rick had ran faster then, then he had ever in his life. Once he reached his car he locked the doors and flipped on the radio. The news man instantly came on. "...Everyone needs to get in their houses and lock on the doors and board up all the windows. Everyone needs some kinda of weapon to kill things. Perfibily a gun buy anything big will work. Anything that will destroy the brain. The only way to kill those "Zombies" is to destroy the brain..." Someone then hti the window hard and Rick looked out the window. It was the women who was next to him earlier and half her cheek was gone. Blood was dripping down her lip and she was slipping off the window. She was going to break the window if she kept on doing that and Rick knew that. So Rick quickly opened the door and smashed her side. She fell to the ground and Rick then put the car in drive and drove away. As Rick drove he hoped to god his son and wife were ok. Chapter 2 At the time Rick Stanley saw the zombies in the park Micheal his son was fine is their home about twenty miles from where Rick was. Micheal was sitting in the computer chair infront of his big screen TV with his two friends Jason, and David. They were playing Xbox when the thud at the door came. Micheal kind of jumped and paused there game to go see who was at the door. Micheal opened the door and there neighbor John Scott came stumbling in. "Call 911 there everywhere!" He yelled as he fell to the ground. "What are you talking about John?" "JUST DO IT!" he yelled and Micheal was already at the phone. But when he dialed 911 nothing happend the phone lines were down. "Its dead" Micheal said as he dropped the phone to the ground. "Oh my god. Son you have to get out of here now!" Micheal jumped and then said, "I would rather wait until my dad gets home before I go anywhere" Then John's hand jerked forward and grabbed onto Micheals collar and screamed, "Your dad is already dead!" Micheal stared at him and asked, "How do you know that?" "Because everyone is dead!" Micheal then asked, "What are those thing out there?" Jason asked he was at the window. "KID! Get away from the windows if they know where here there will be no way out." And then Jason said, "ARE THOSE ZOMBIES?" John Scott looked at him again hobbles over towards him and threw him away from the window and then closed the blinds. "If thats what you want to call them sure." John said as he walked over to the door and put on the dead lock. "We have to get out of here now. Does your dad collect any guns?" Micheal looked up at him and said, "No but Kent Salo next door was in Desert Storm and now hes a gun fanatic. The only way we could get his guns would be to hope to god hes dead or gone" John looked up and said, "Well lets get moving get something you can hit them with until we get the guns" MIcheal went into his room and grabbed three baseball bats for him and his two friends. John went into the Rick's room and opened his tool box and pulled out a hammer. Once all four of them were together they slid opened the back slide door. Once they were all outside John could see from far away a fire was happening and he could hear people screaming in pain. At once all four of them started to run towards the fence to the right of them. The house over the fence was a two story house and it was painted blue. John grabbed Micheals feet and threw him over the fence. Then one by one John threw them over the fence. Finally when it was his turn his grabbed on to the top of the fence and was getting ready to shove himself over. Then out of no where there was alot of moaning and screaming and yelling. John turned around toward Rick's house and zombies where coming at him in the thousands. "Oh my dear god" he said as he threw himself over the fence. "GET IN THE HOUSE GO, GO, GO!" he yelled as they slid open the back slide door. At once Joh began to stack things behind it so it could slide open. Then when he was finished with that he garbebd bigger things like the couch and stacked them in front of the front door. "Ok were finished everyone start searching for the guns. They could be anywhere" Thats when John saw all the blood in the kitchen. It was a trail but John didnt know where it led to. He followed it and it led into the basement. Thats where Micheal and his friends went to look. "Oh my god" John said as he gripped the hammer and went down the steps one by one. Halfway down the steps he saw a maglite so he grabbed it. He turned it on and yelled, "Micheal where are you and your friends" "Were over here, we found some" Joh heard MIcheal say. John started walking with his head down when he heard the noise. He slwoly raised his head and shone the maglite around the room. Then in the corner of the room was Kent Salo eating his wifes instestins. "Jesus" John said. And Kent snapped his head around and growled. He jumped up and charged John. John brought the hammer back and swung at Kent. But Kent grabebd him by his waist and tackled him. Kent moved his head fast and tried to bite at John's neck but John swung the hammer again and hit him in the temple exact. Kent fell over and John rolled over to his side and got up. Kent was already on his feet. It looked as if he was smiling but John didnt have enough to time to think about it. Kent again charged him but this time there was a gunshot and Kents face imploded. Kents dead body fell to the ground with a loud THUD! John twisted around and saw Micheal had a .45 and it was pointed ahead. "Oh god thank you Micheal" Micheal lowerd the gun and turned back around towards the gun shelf. "Holy hell look at all these guns" John said and he put his hand in the pile of guns. He grabbed out two shotguns and found two straps and strapped them around his back. Then he loaded the guns to make sure they were perfectly loaded. Then he filled his pockets and The side of the guns with ammo. Then he grabbed four handguns and loaded them all and then loaded his pockets with ammo. John then strapped on the other two handguns to his belt and kept out two of them. "I dont even think this is going to be enough." John at last but not least he grabbed an uzi and loaded it and then loaded more ammo into his pcokets. John got more ammo for the machine gun then he did any other gun. "I think we should all grab back-packs and load them with ammo and more guns so just in case we find other people who need guns" So they all four got back-packs and loaded themself with more guns. MIcheal had four hand guns strapped all the way around his chest and back, and he had one automatic pistol. His two friends had the same as Micheal. When they were about finished John suddenly heard glass break up stairs. "Oh shit there here we have to get moving. Load your guns and get ready" John said as he began running up the wooden basement stairs. Once he was up stairs he saw that the slide door glass had been broken and zombies were streaming in. John raised his two hand guns and began firing, being careful to hit every single one in the head. John ran for the front door and began to throw all the thing out of his way. "Lets go boys where getting ou-" The front door opened before John could finish and someone walked in. Chapter 3 Pushing the numbers of his wife's cell phone was hard as he drove threw thousands of zombies. Rick finally got threw to his wife and he almost stopped the car and jumped out he was so happy. "Hello" Rick heard his wife say. "LAURA. Your ok! Where are you?"Rick asked his wife. "I'm at the grocery store with lots of other people. Those things are trying to get in Rick you have to help me PLEASE" "Its ok honey I have to go home and get Micheal and then I'll come get you. You just sit there and be safe OK?" "OK but please hurr-" The line went dead. "SHIT!" Rick yelled and threw his cell phone down. Thats when Rick saw his house in the line of other houses. Rick pulled over to the side of the road and got out. He ran over to his house door and opened it. No one was inside. He ran in and looked around no one. But before he left he went into his room to open his tool box. But it was already open. And his hammer was gone. "What the hell?" he mutterd under his breath, so Rick instead grabbed his monkey wrench and left his house. He stepped out side and a zombie was just standing there. Rick swung the wrench and nailed the zombie in the face and it fell to the ground dead. Thats when a gun shot came from the house next door. It came from Kent Salo's house. Rick faced towards the house and then went into a dead sprint. Once he reached the house he opened the front door. When he did right in front of him stood John Scott. He looked dumbfound. "Oh my god! Rick your ok!" John hugged him and when he bent down to hug Rick, Rick saw over Johns shoulder. Behind John was his son. Rick pushed John off and stepped over to Micheal. "MICHEAL OH GOSH IM SO GLAD YOUR OK I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!" Thats when Rick saw all the zombies behind them "We have to leave lets go" John said and he ran out of the house. Rick put his son down and ran after him. Micheal was last out and he pulled the door cloesed when he left. Rick was in front when they reahced the car, Rick had to swing his wrench at a few zombies before he could open the door. Micheal was getting ready to get in when he said, "Oh my god wheres David?" Rick opened the door again and looked out into the front yard of Kent Salos house. There laying in a group was Micheals friend David, he was being disembowled. "Holy lord" Rick mutterd and got back in the car. "Im sorry Micheal but your friends gone" John said. Rick started up the car, turned around and left the neighborhood. Once they were out of the neighborhood John put his back-pack on his lap and pulled out a handgun and some ammo. "Here ya go Rick take this you will need it." Rick looked at it and said, "No need we are going to the Neils gun shop. We can reload there and get more guns" No body talked while they drove. When they finally got to the gun shop there were dead bodies everywhere in front of the store. They were all zombies and they had all been shot. Rick stepped out with his monkey wrench in hand and John also stepped out but now he unstrapped one of his shotguns. John pumped the shotgun and went into the store. Micheal and Jason were right behind the two men. Rick went behind the counter and saw Neil Diamond with his head blown off. He had killed himself. Rick turned away and got a shotgun from the rack. He also picked up a strap and strapped it to his chest. Then he picked up and small handgun off the floor, then Rick found a ankle holster and holsterd the small gun to his ankle. Then Rick found an auto matic handgun and put it in his pants. One by one, John pulled off all the handguns and put them in his back-pack. John also found all the ammo he could and put it in his back-pack. Rick also pulled off a sack and filled it with a sniper rifle, two more shotguns and three more handguns. Once they were finished Rick pumped his loaded shotgun and walked back outside. Then Rick saw it, something he had forgotten all about. It had been right infront of the gun store the whole time and Rick never thought of it. The Fort Rock Mall. Chapter 4 The security room in the Fort Rock Mall was queit exect for the small sound of the cheif gaurd, Mike Sowl, snoring. When one of the stores glass broke it woke him up immidietly. He jumped out of his seat and kind of sat there for a few minutes looking around wondering what was going on. Then he looked at the moniter and saw four people walking down the Mall's hallway. Mike got up form his seat and unholsterd his handgun. He opened the security room door and walked out into the mall. Mike immidietly saw the four people walking down the hall. They were walking towards him. It looked as if they were loaded up on guns. But it didnt matter how many guns they had one shot to the head to any of them is going to kill um'. Mike started walking faster and then he rasied his handgun, pointed towards the four people and yelled, "GET OUT OF MY MALL NOW!" He was about to pull off a shot when one of the smaller kids pulled his shot first. It hit Mike in the chest and he first dropped his gun and then put his hand to his chest. "No, no dont let those things in here no" Those were Mikes finale words as Micheal, Jason, John and Rick walked down towards his body "Micheal why did you shoot that man!?" John yelled at Micheal. "Because he was going to shoot us" Rick asnwerd for his son. "Are the doors locked?" John asked as he walked into the security room. On one of the screens it said, DOORS LOCKED."Well that ansswers my question" John said as a remark to his own question. Thats when John saw the other screens, "Oh my god, Rick I think you should see the security cameras" Rick walked over and joined John. "Jesus Christ" Rick said as he stood there staring at screens, Each screen showed a different angle of the parking lot, and each angle was filled with millions of zombies. "They know somethings in here. And if its not that then somehow they remember they dont know how they remember but those things remember they want to be in here" John said. Thats when the gunshots came. "What the hell is that?" John roared. "Someone else is in here. And they have guns" Rick said as he unstrapped his shotgun. At the same time John unholsterd his shotgun. They both loaded there guns while Micheal and Jason unholsterd there guns. The gunshots didnt stop for a few minutes and when they finally did, all four of the group heard footsteps coming. "O shit, o shit, o shit!" John whisperd. Thats when the three convicts, in orange plad suits with each of there cell numbers on there breast pocket, walked into Johns sights. They each had a hunting shotgun. Thats when the convicts walked over to the front doors and just broke everysingle window in the doors. By then John had already had enough. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!" John yelled as he ran out of the security room and pointed the shotgun at the three men. "Hey whoa man. Where just lettin' the zombies in" The first one said. "You fucker" John said and shot the lead man in the stomach with the shotgun. He flew back threw the doors and into the pile of zombies that were coming threw the doors. The two other men yelled and aimed there guns at John. But it was too late, the zombies were already all over the two other men. Micheal and Jason were already running the oppisate direction of the zombies to the other end of the mall. Hopefully they have a back door,John thought to himself. When they were finally far enough away where they couldnt see the zombies they all sat down and thought everythinh threw. "What are we supposed to do now? In a few minutes this place is going to be swarming with zombies." John said, "Rick who was sitting down with his head drooped swiped his head up and said, "My wife we need to go get her. She is at Grocery-Mart." John got up and said, "Rick I dont know how to tell you this but shes probably either dead or left" Rick snapped Johns hand off his shoulder and grabbed him by his collar and yelled, "DONT YOU EVER SAY THAT ABOUT MY WIFE AGAIN!" John pushed Rick off of him and said, "Suttle down man, suttle down. I'm sorry lets go look for her" They all left that part of the mall and went for the back door. Once they finally found it out in the back parking lot there was a utility van that was used to bring things to the mall. They all loaded up into it and drove it to the grocery store. Chapter 5 The glass crunching under each step was proabably the worst sound Officer Howlond ever heard. Officer Howlond was the only african american cop in the police buisness in Fort Rock. And he was also the cheif of police before the whole zombie thing but now he was just a normal human looking for a way to live. He held a pump shotgun and was walking threw the local grocery store looking for food. No one was there but him and a few dead bodies. One of the bodies was a women and she had a cell phone right next to her body. Thats when Cheif Howlond heard footsteps behind him, he swifled around and aimed his gun at the four people behind him. "No dont shoot please dont shoot." The tallest one said. "What's your names?" Officer Howlond asked. The tallest one spoke again, "Mine is John, his is Rick and the two kids are Jason and Micheal" "Nice to meet you mines Frank Howloand but you can just call me Frank" Thats when Rick pushed ahead of Frank and crouched next to the dead body of the women Frank saw earlier. "Oh my god no, no, no, NO!" Rick yelled and pounded the floor. Micheal then put his hands to his eyes and began to sobb. "Is it mom, dad?" Micheal asked Rick. Rick walked over to Micheal, hugged him and said, "Yea son it is, I'm so sorry" Frank walked on threw the grocery store feeding his pack to some food. "You guys mind if I come with you?" Frank asked the four people. "Yes please we could use some company" John asnwerd. Thats when the zombies came. The first one thatc came in grabbed Jason by the shoulders and jerked him back and ripped his throat out. Micheal yelled and stumbled over a peice of wood. Micheal fell to the ground and Rick was trying to help him up when one of the zombies gripped onto his arm. "NO YOU SON OF A BITCH GET OFF ME!" Rick yelled and put the barrel of his shotgun to its head and fired. Its whole head was gone in seconds. Rick picked Micheal up off the ground and pushed him to the back of the store. Frank fumbled around his belt for a second then finally pulled off a gernade. "EVERYONE BACK!" Frank yelled. John and Rick immidietly jumped back as Frank pulled the clip on the gernade. He threw it right in the middle of the group. About all the zombies there burst into nothing when the gernade exploded. Now there was a perfect path out of the store. Frank grabbed Micheal and pulled him out of the store with John and Rick. Once they were out they all jumped in the van and drove off. "Oh my thank you so much" John said to Frank. "No problem" Frank answerd. Zombies were piling up in the street so Rick was hitting them non stop. "This vans going to break down before we get threw these things." Rick said. Thats when Frank saw the propane tank in the cornor of the van. "I have an idea. Stop the van real quick" Rick breaked the van and Frank grabbed the propane tank and opened the top hatch in the van. He got on top of the van and threw the propane tank ine the crowd. He unholsterd his shotgun pumped it and fired. It hit the tank first hit and it exploded. Frank dropped back into the van and Rick started moving again. "Good thinking" John said. "Oh my god I just rememberd something. The helicopter flys they give down town. Where they take you all around town for an hour. The helicopter that takes you is always in the hanger. Maybe its there now" John said. Rick looked back at John and he had a big smile on his face. Chapter 6 Rick pulled the van into the airport and all four of them got out. They all four started walking towards the bulding you had to go threw to get to the hangers. Frank opened the door and saw thousands of zombies. They were everywhere swarming around something, Frank pulled out a gernade and threw it in the crowrd. It exploded and all the zombies flew back agains the wall. All four of then started walking threw the path of zombies. But one didnt die. It brought its hand out and grabbed onto Micheals ankle, Micheal screamed and tried to pull back. Rick aimed his pistol at the zombies hand and fired. It moaned and let go, but it was already to late. The zombie had bitten Micheal before Rick had fired. "OH MY DAD PLEASE HELP ME I DONT WANNA' DIE!" But now more zombies were getting up and all of them grabbed onto Micheal and pulled him back into the crowd. Rick flipped out and jumped into the crowd of zombies with his shotgun and started firing. Most of them went down but a couple were still up. Eventully one of the zombies disembowled Micheal and Rick screamed in anger and blew the zombies head off. One of the zombies grabbed onto Ricks back and ripped out a part of his spine. Rick screamed and fell to the ground crying. John pulled out his uzi and started pulling off shots like crazy. He took out most of them but Frank and John had to leave so they started to run. They reached the helicopter and John jumped it and tried to start it. Frank stayed at the bottem picking off the zombies one by one. Finally John got the helicopter started and Frank jumped it and started killing off even more zombies with Johns uzi. But one of the zombies jumped into the helicopter and bit Frank on the arm. Frank threw the zombie out and lit it up. "Oh my god Frank"John mutterd. But John wasnt worried about Frank being bit he was looking at the fuel gage in the helicopter. The dial was at E. Slowly the helicopter died.
what is the theme of this? Flight to the South Pole 1 Thanksgiving Day, November 28th, brought what we wanted. At noon, the Geological Party radioed a final weather report: "Unchanged. Perfect visibility. No clouds anywhere." Harrison finished with his balloon runs, Haines with his weather charts. The sky was still somewhat overcast, and the surface wind from the east southeast. Haines came into the library, his face grave. Together, we went out for a walk and a last look at the weather. What he said exactly I have forgotten, but it was in effect: "If you don't go now, you may never have another chance as good as this." And that was that. 2 The mechanics, Bubier, Roth and Demas, went over the plane for the last time, testing everything with scrupulous care. A line of men passed five-gallon cans of gasoline to several men standing on the wing, who poured them into the wing tanks. Another line fed the stream of gear which flowed into the plane. Black weighed each thing before passing it on to McKinley and June, who were stowing the stuff in the cabin. Hanson went over the radio equipment. With de Ganahl, I made a careful check of the sextant and the watches and chronometers, which were among the last things put aboard. For days, de Ganahl and I had nursed the chronometers, checking them against the time tick broadcast every night from the United States. We knew their exact loss or gain. 3 The total weight was approximately 15,000 pounds. 4 Haines came up with a final report on the weather. "A twenty-mile wind from the south at 2,000 feet." I went into my office and picked up a flag weighted with a stone from Floyd Bennett's grave. It seemed fitting that something connected with the spirit of this noble friend, who stood with me over the North Pole, on May 9th, 1926, should rest as long as stone endures at the bottom of the world. 5 There were handshakes all around, and at 3:29 o'clock we were off. The skis were in the air after a run of 30 seconds--an excellent takeoff. A calm expectation took hold of my mind. 6 Had you been there to glance over the cabin of this modern machine which has so revolutionized polar travel, I think you would have been impressed most of all--perhaps first of all--with the profusion of gear in the cabin. There was a small sledge, rolled masses of sleeping bags, bulky food sacks, two pressure gasoline stoves, rows of cans of gasoline packed about the main tank forward, funnels for draining gasoline and oil from the engines, bundles of clothing, tents, and so on ad infinitum. There was scarcely room in which to move. 7 June had his radio in the after bulkhead on the port side. From time to time, he flashed reports on our progress to the base. From the ear phones strapped to his helmet ran long cords so that he might move freely about the cabin without being obliged to take them off. His duties were varied and important. He had to attend to the motion picture camera, the radio, and the complicated valves of the six gasoline tanks. Every now and then, he relieved Balchen at the wheel or helped him to follow the elusive trail. 8 McKinley had his mapping camera ready for action either on port or starboard side. It was for him and the camera he so sedulously served that the flight was made. The mapping of the corridor between Little America and the South Pole was one of the major objectives of the expedition. 9 Balchen was forward, bulking large in the narrow compartment, his massive hands on the wheel, now appraising the engines with a critical eye, now the dozen flickering fingers on the dials on the instrument board. Balchen was in his element. His calm, fine face bespoke his confidence and sureness. He was anticipating the struggle at the "Hump" almost with eagerness. 10 It was quite warm forward, behind the engines. But a cold wind swept through the cabin, making one thankful for heavy clothes. When the skies cleared, a golden light poured into the cabin. The sound of the engines and propellers filled it. One had to shout to make oneself heard. From the navigation table aft, where my charts were spread out, a trolley ran to the control cabin. Over it, I shouted to Balchen the necessary messages and courses; he would turn and smile his understanding. 11 That, briefly, is the picture, and a startling one it makes in contrast with that of Amundsen's party, which had pressed along this same course eighteen years before. A wing, pistons and flashing propellers had taken the place of runner, dogs, and legs. Amundsen was delighted to make 25 miles per day. We had to average 90 miles per hour to accomplish our mission. We had the advantages of swiftness and comfort, but we had as well an enlarged fallibility. A flaw in a piece of steel, a bit of dirt in the fuel lines or carburetor jets, a few hours of strong head winds, fog or storm-- these things, remotely beyond our control, could destroy our carefully laid plans and nullify our most determined efforts. 12 Still, it was not these things that entered our minds. Rather, it was the thought of the "Hump," and how we should fare with it. 13 Soon after passing the crevasses, we picked up again the vast escarpment to the right. More clearly than before, we saw the white-blue streams of many glaciers discharging into the Barrier, and several of the higher snow-clad peaks glistened so brightly in the sun as to seem like volcanoes in eruption. 14 Now the Queen Maud Range loomed ahead. I searched again for the "appearance of land" to the east. Still the rolling Barrier--nothing else. 15 At 8:15, we had the Geological Party in sight--a cluster of beetles about two dark-topped tents. Balchen dropped overboard the photographs of the Queen Maud Range and the other things we had promised to bring. The parachute canopy to which they were attached fluttered open and fell in gentle oscillations, and we saw two or three figures rush out to catch it. We waved to them and then prepared for settlement of the issue at the "Hump." 16 Up to this time, the engines had operated continuously at cruising revolutions. Now Balchen opened them full throttle, and the Ford girded its loins for the long, fighting pull over the "Hump." We rose steadily. We were then about 60 miles north of the western portal of Axel Heiberg, and holding our course steadily on meridian 163° 45' W. with the sun compass. 17 I watched the altimeters, of which there were two in the navigation department. The fingers marched with little jumps across the face of the dial--3,000 feet; 3,500; 4,000; 4,500. The Ford had her toes in and was climbing with a vast, heaving effort. 18 Drawing nearer, we had edged 30° to the west of south, to bring not only Axel Heiberg but also Liv Glacier into view. This was a critical period. I was by no means certain which glacier I should choose for the ascent. I went forward and took a position behind the pilots. 19 The schemes and hopes of the next few minutes were beset by many uncertainties. Which would it be--Axel Heiberg or Liv Glacier? 20 There was this significant difference between flying and sledging: we could not pause long for decision or investigation. Minutes stood for gasoline, and gasoline was precious. The waste of so little as half an hour of fuel in a fruitless experiment might well overturn the mathematical balance on which the success of the flight depended. The execution of the plan hung on the proper choice of the route over the "Hump." 21 Yet how well, after all, could judgment forecast the ultimate result? There were few facts on which we might base a decision. We knew, for example, from Amundsen's report that the highest point of the pass of Axel Heiberg Glacier was 10,500 feet. We should know, in a very few minutes, after June had calculated the gasoline consumption, the weight of the plane. From that we could determine, according to the tables we had worked out and which were then before me, the approximate ceiling we should have. We should know, too, whether or not we should be able to complete the flight, other conditions being favorable. 22 These were the known elements. The unknown were burdened with equally important consequences. The structural nature of the head of the pass was of prime importance. We knew from Amundsen's descriptions and from what we could see with our own eyes, that the pass on both sides was surrounded by towering peaks, much higher than the maximum ceiling of the heavily loaded plane. But whether the pass was wide or narrow, whether it would allow us room to maneuver in case we could not rise above it, whether it would be narrow and running with a torrent of down-pressing wind which would dash a plane, already hovering near its service ceiling to the glacier floor--these were things, naturally, we could not possibly know until the issue was directly at hand. 23 I stood beside Balchen, carefully studying the looming fortress, still wondering by what means we should attempt to carry it. With a gesture of the hand, Balchen pointed to fog vapor rising from the black rock of the foothills which were Nansen's high priests, caused no doubt by the condensation of warm currents of air radiated from the sun-heated rocks. A thin layer of cloud seemed to cap Axel Heiberg's pass and extended almost to Liv Glacier. But of this we were not certain. Perhaps it was the surface of the snow. If it were a cloud, then our difficulties were already upon us. Even high clouds would be resting on the floor of the uplifted plateau. 24 There was then a gamble in the decision. Doubtless a flip of the coin would have served as well. In the end, we decided to choose Liv Glacier, the unknown pass to the right which Amundsen had seen far in the distance and named after Dr. Nansen's daughter. It seemed to be broader than Axel Heiberg, and the pass not quite so high. 25 A few minutes after 9 o'clock, we passed near the intermediate base which, of course, we could not see. Our altitude was then about 9,000 feet. At 9:15, we had the eastern portal on our left and were ready to tackle the "Hump." We had discussed the "Hump" so often, had anticipated and maligned it so much, that now that it was in front of us and waiting in the flesh--in rock-ribbed, glacierized reality--it was like meeting an old acquaintance. But we approached it warily and respectfully, climbing steadily all the while with maximum power, to get a better view of its none-too-friendly visage. 26 June, wholly unaffected by the immediate perplexities, went about his job of getting the plane fighting trim, less heavy. He ripped open the last of the fuel cans and poured the contents into the main tank. The empty tins he dropped overboard, through the trapdoor. Every tin weighed two pounds, and every pound dropped was to our gain. June examined the gauges of the five wing tanks, then measured with a graduated stick the amount of fuel in the main tank. He jotted the figures on a pad, made a few calculations, and handed me the results. Consumption had thus far averaged between 55 and 60 gallons per hour. It had taken us longer to reach the mountains than we had expected, owing to head winds. However, the extra fuel taken aboard just before we left had absorbed this loss, and we actually had a credit balance. We then had enough gasoline to take us to the Pole and back. 27 With that doubt disposed of, we went at the "Hump" confidently. 28 We were still rising, and the engines were pulling wonderfully well. The wind was about abeam and, according to my calculations, not materially affecting the speed. 29 The glacier floor rose sharply, in a series of ice falls and terraces, some of which were well above the (then) altitude of the plane. These glacial waterfalls, some of which were from 200 to 400 feet high, seemed more beautiful than any precipitous stream I have ever seen. Beautiful yes--but how rudely and with what finality they would deal with steel and duralumin that crashed into them at 100 miles per hour. 30 Now the stream of air pouring down the pass roughened perceptibly. The great wing shivered and teetered as it balanced itself against the changing pressures. The wind from the left flowed against Fisher's steep flanks, and the constant, hammering bumps made footing uncertain in the plane. But McKinley steadily trained his 50-pound camera on the mountains to the left. The uncertainties of load and ceiling were not his concern. His only concern was photographs--photographs over which students and geographers pore in the calm quiet of their studies. 31 The altimeters showed a height of 9,600 feet, but the figure was not necessarily exact. Nevertheless, there were indications we were near the service ceiling of the plane. 32 The roughness of the air increased and became so violent that we were forced to swing slightly to the left, in search of calmer air. This brought us over a frightfully crevassed slope which ran up and toward Mount Nansen. We thus escaped the turbulent swirl about Fisher, but the down-surging currents here damped our climb. To the left, we had the "blind" mountain glacier of Nansen in full view; and when we looked ahead we saw the plateau--a smooth, level plain of snow between Nansen and Fisher. The pass rose up to meet it. 33 In the center of the pass was a massive outcropping of snow-covered rocks, resembling an island, which protruded above and separated the descending stream of ice. Perhaps it was a peak or the highest eminence of a ridge connecting Fisher and Nansen which had managed through the ages to hold its head above the glacial torrent pouring down from the plateau. But its particular structure or relationship was of small import then. I watched it only with reference to the climb of the plane; and realized, with some disgust and more consternation, that the nose of the plane, in spite of the fact that Balchen had steepened the angle of attack, did not rise materially above the outcropping. We were still climbing, but at a rapidly diminishing rate of speed. In the rarefied air, the heavy plane responded to the controls with marked sluggishness. There is a vast difference between the plane of 1928 and the plane of 1937. 34 It was an awesome thing, creeping (so it seemed) through the narrow pass, with the black walls of Nansen and Fisher on either side, higher than the level of the wings, and watching the nose of the ship bob up and down across the face of that chunk of rock. It would move up, then slide down. Then move up, and fall off again. For perhaps a minute or two, we deferred the decision, but there was no escaping it. If we were to risk a passage through the pass, we needed greater maneuverability than we had at that moment. Once we entered the pass, there would be no retreat. It offered no room for turn. If power was lost momentarily or if the air became excessively rough, we could only go ahead or down. We had to climb, and there was only one way in which we could climb. 35 June, anticipating the command, already had his hand on the dump valve of the main tank. A pressure of the fingers--that was all that was necessary--and in two minutes, 600 gallons of gasoline would gush out. I signaled to wait. 36 Balchen held to the climb almost to the edge of a stall. But it was clear to both of us that he could not hold it long enough. Balchen began to yell and gesticulate, and it was hard to catch the words in the roar of the engines echoing from the cliffs on either side. But the meaning was manifest. "Overboard--overboard--200 pounds!" 37 Which would it be--gasoline or food? 38 If gasoline, I thought, we might as well stop there and turn back. We could never get back to the base from the Pole. If food, the lives of all of us would be jeopardized in the event of a forced landing. Was that fair to McKinley, Balchen, and June? It really took only a moment to reach the decision. The Pole, after all, was our objective. I knew the character of the three men. McKinley, in fact, had already hauled one of the food bags to the trapdoor. It weighed 125 pounds. 39 The brown bag was pushed out and fell, spinning, to the glacier. The improvement in the flying qualities of the plane was noticeable. It took another breath and resumed the climb. 40 Now the down-currents over Nansen became stronger. The plane trembled and rose and fell, as if struck bodily. We veered a trifle to the right, searching for helpful, rising eddies. Balchen was flying shrewdly. He maintained flight at a sufficient distance below the absolute ceiling of the plane to retain at all times enough maneuverability to make him master of the ship. But he was hard pressed by circumstances, and I realized that, unless the plane was further lightened, the final thrust might bring us perilously close to the end of our reserve. 41 "More," Bernt shouted. "Another bag." 42 McKinley shoved a second bag through the trapdoor, and this time we saw it hit the glacier, and scatter in a soundless explosion. Two hundred and fifty pounds of food--enough to feed four men for a month--lay strewn on the barren ice. 43 The sacrifice swung the scales. The plane literally rose with a jump, the engines dug in, and we soon showed a gain in altitude of anywhere from 300 to 400 feet. It was what we wanted. We should clear the pass with about 500 feet to spare. Balchen gave a shout of joy. It was just as well. We could dump no more food. There was nothing left to dump except McKinley's camera. I am sure that, had he been asked to put it overboard, he would have done so instantly; and I am equally sure he would have followed the precious instrument with his own body. 44 The next few minutes dragged. We moved at a speed of 77 nautical miles per hour through the pass, with the black walls of Nansen on our left. The wing gradually lifted above them. The floor of the plateau stretched in a white immensity to the south. We were over the dreaded "Hump" at last. The Pole lay dead ahead over the horizon, less than 300 miles away. It was then about 9:45 o'clock (I did not note the exact time. There were other things to think about). 45 Gaining the plateau, we studied the situation a moment and then shifted course to the southward. Nansen's enormous towering ridge, lipped by the plateau, shoved its heavily broken sides into the sky. A whole chain of mountains began to parade across the eastern horizon. How high they are I cannot say, but surely some of them must be around 14,000 feet, to stand so boldly above the rim of the 10,000 foot plateau. Peak on peak, ridge on ridge, draped in snow garments which brilliantly reflected the sun, they extended in a solid array to the southeast. But can one really say they ran in that direction? The lines of direction are so bent in this region that 150 miles farther on, even were they to continue in the same general straight line, they must run north of east. This is what happens near the Pole. 46 We laid our line of flight on the 171st meridian. 47 Our altitude was then between 10,500 and 11,000 feet. We were "riding" the engines, conscious of the fact that if one should fail we must come down. Once the starboard engine did sputter a bit, and Balchen nosed down while June rushed to the fuel valves. But it was nothing; to conserve fuel, Balchen had "leaned" the mixture too much. A quick adjustment corrected the fault; and, in a moment, the engine took up its steady rhythm. Moments like this one make a pioneering flight anything but dull; one moment everything is lovely, and the next is full of foreboding. 48 From time to time, June "spelled" Balchen at the controls, and Balchen would walk back to the cabin, flexing his cramped muscles. There was little thought of food for any of us--a beef sandwich, stiff as a board from frost, and tea and coffee from a thermos bottle. It was difficult to believe that two decades or so before the most resolute men who had ever attempted to carry a remote objective, Scott and Shackleton, had plodded over this same plateau, a few miles each day, with hunger, fierce, unrelenting hunger, stalking them every step of the way. 49 Between 11:30 and 12:30, the mountains to the eastward began to disappear, dropping imperceptibly out of view, one after another. Not long after 12:30, the whole range had retreated from vision, and the plateau met the horizon in an indefinite line. The mountains to the right had long since disappeared. 50 The air finally turned smooth. At 12:38, I shot the sun. It hung, a ball of fire, just beyond south to the east, 21° above the horizon. So it was quite low, and we stared it in the eye. The sight gave me an approximate line of latitude, which placed us very near our position as calculated by dead reckoning. That dead reckoning and astronomy should check so closely was very encouraging. The position line placed us at Lat. 89° 4 ½' S., or 55 ½ miles from the Pole. A short time later, we reached an altitude of 11,000 feet. According to Amundsen's records, the plateau, which had risen to 10,300 feet, descended here to 9,600 feet. We were, therefore, about 1,400 feet above the plateau. 51 So the Pole was actually in sight. But I could not yet spare it so much as a glance. Chronometers, drift indicators, and compasses are hard taskmasters. 52 Relieved by June, Balchen came aft and reported that visibility was not as good as it had been. Clouds were gathering on the horizon off the port bow, and a storm, Balchen thought, was in the air. A storm was the last thing we wanted to meet on the plateau on the way back. It would be difficult enough to pass the Queen Maud Range in bright sunlight; in thick weather, it would be suicidal. Conditions, however, were merely unpromising: not really bad, simply not good. If worse came to worst, we decided we could out-race the clouds to the mountains. 53 At six minutes after one, a sight of the sun put us a few miles ahead of our dead reckoning position. We were quite close now. At 1:14 Greenwich mean time, our calculations showed that we were at the Pole. 54 I opened the trapdoor and dropped over the calculated position of the Pole the small flag which was weighted with the stone from Bennett's grave. Stone and flag plunged down together. The flag had been advanced 1,500 miles farther south than it had ever been advanced by any American or American expedition. 55 For a few seconds, we stood over the spot where Amundsen had stood, December 14th, 1911, and where Scott had also stood, thirty-four days later, reading the note which Amundsen had left for him. In their honor, the flags of their countries were again carried over the Pole. There was nothing now to mark that scene: only a white desolation and solitude disturbed by the sound of our engines. The Pole lay in the center of a limitless plain. To the right, which is to say to the eastward, the horizon was covered with clouds. If mountains lay there, as some geologists believe, they were concealed, and we had no hint of them. 56 And that, in brief, is all there is to tell about the South Pole. One gets there, and that is about all there is for the telling. It is the effort to get there that counts. * * * * Sunday, Dec. 1 57 . . . Well, it's done. We have seen the Pole. McKinley, Balchen, and June have delivered the goods. They took the Pole in their stride, neatly, expeditiously, and undismayedly. If I had searched the world, I doubt if I could have found a better team. Theirs was the actual doing. But there is not a man in this camp who did not assist in the preparation for the flight. Whatever merit accrues to the accomplishment must be shared with them.
If punk is dead...? then explain the bands, the squatters, the anarchists and everyone else. Explain why you can pack a bar, warehouse or abandoned space with kids and see a great band. Explain Burnt Ramen, 924 Gilman, Thee Parkside, C-Squat, Triple Rock, Red 7, etc etc It's not dead... it's beyond the obvious old bands that know-it-alls cling to, it's got NOTHING to do with the radio. Maybe it's dead to the main stream, but it is a culture and a movement that will never ever die. Maybe you got old and lost touch and just deem it as dead. Maybe you're not looking in the right places or care enough to even buy a record or go to a show. Maybe a lot of shows lack in people, but that's because there are so many bands and frankly, some of them blow. Punk is over 30 years old... there are some excellent bands that can draw in a thousand kids. There are anarchists that are ACTIVE. Crawling from the mess that they'd left standing as our future We realised we needed 'no one' to mouth off our message for us Told big business to take a running jump, went back underground where we started The tribe then split, as some stayed behind to mourn -A Piss in the Ocean, Conflict
Are there any Unsigned Bands out there Craving Airtime? I, along with my co-host Tashy, host The Clothesaphobic Hours, a music/talk programme on SubFM.org. I've always appreciated the unsigned bands out there & would love to give them a little airtime & advertising to get their name out there in the public. Although SubFM is small & independently owned, a hell of a lot of people stream it from the Internet via the website, and many more mainstream radio shows also listen for talent. I have recently designed an Unsigned bands section of our show, where we'll play some tunes from your LPs or individual recordings on air live for all to hear. We mostly play a mix of rock, punk, alt, emo, progressive, experimental, acoustic, indie and rockabilly. If you feel that you are in a band craving some airtime, we are currently accepting LPs, EPs and recordings. Please E-mail us anytime at clothesaphobic@hotmail.com or post here & I'll get back to you with information. We are an Australian radio show, but all countries are accepted!
Where is Robert Grimes, Jr (RA14475332)? Spring 1966 Long Range Patrol by Ranger Jerry Conners A Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol was formed from members of the 1st Bn (ABN) 8th Cav Recon platoon and attached to division headquarters in the spring of 1966 as directed by the Department of Defense where seven LRRP teams from the US Army Special Forces, US Marine Corps, Navy and other Army units were established to conduct simultaneous patrols within the Republic of Vietnam. The Chinese Bandit five man team members were SSG Robert Grimes, Jr (Acting Platoon Leader of the Recon Platoon), SGT J Conners, Keijo Hyvonen, Louis Tyler, and Terry Stevens. The first long range patrol was conducted along a 75 km route adjacent to the Cambodian and Laotian borders for a period of twelve days and was performed while the other DOD directed teams performed LRRP patrols in other portions of Vietnam. The major objective of the patrol was to locate North Vietnamese positions that had been reported along the border and to obtain specific essential elements of information that included descriptions of the enemy’s uniforms, weapons, communication and other equipment and the presence of any Caucasian personnel. We wore a mixture of uniforms including standard issue jungle fatigues, WWII vintage camouflage fatigues and 'tiger fatigues'. All members wore patrol caps, LBE with two canteens, two ammo pouches, one butt pack and carried M-16 rifles (taped with slings removed) with bayonets. Two members of the patrol also wore NVA captured rucksacks. Only one 35mm camera and two sets of binoculars were carried. The first LRRP rations were issued and each member carried 6 after removing the outer package and discarding everything except the main dehydrated meal. We intended to only eat one meal per day and our diet was supplemented by a variety of foods including ‘jungle chocolate candy bars’. Only one PRC-25 radio was carried; however, a vertical half-rhombic antenna was carried in addition to the two other standard antennas. Only one SOI was carried and used to prepare the coded daily reports what were transmitted. No fragmentation grenades were carried and only two smoke grenades, one by both Grimes and myself. Several of us wore the 101st Recondo School taped soap dish containing sutures, morphine and other emergency medical items secured to our LBE harness. All members of the patrol had a wound piece of ‘550 chord’ secured to our harness with a 2000 pound tensile strength snap link. SSG Grimes and I drove a jeep to Division G-2 where captured NVA equipment was stacked in front of the entrance. We were given a briefing that included descriptions of the area we were to patrol and the locations of suspected NVA regiments. We were instructed to recommend and plot our routes and request for pre-arranged fire support after Grimes flew a low reconnaissance of the area in an OH-13. Grimes and I returned to the Battalion area and tentatively selected the routes and observation points from the supplied topographic maps and aerial photographs. We gave the LRRP patrol members a warning order prior to Grimes performing the reconnaissance flight. Upon his return we discussed what he had observed and did not alter our intended routes. The entire patrol participated in the preparation of the operations order that was later given by SSG Grimes. There were no rehearsals performed and the time prior to departure was spent studying maps and checking equipment. We were inserted about two hours before nightfall using one UH-1 that made only one descent and hover for unloading located near an active and believed to be safe farming area located about 25 km east of the area where we would be operating. We moved rapidly into the tree covered mountainous at the southern limit of the patrol area and proceed through the night to our first observation and study area. Movement, consisting of walking the approximately 18 hour point to point routes, was intended to be limited to late evening and night navigation with daily situation reports were made in the early morning to airborne Air Force aircraft from positions selected on mountain tops that afforded the opportunity to observe long distances. Rising smoke from what was believed to be cooking fires was plotted on the topographic maps that we carried; however, the planned patrol route was not altered and these sightings were not evaluated from close range. We remained on game trails during most of the movements between observation points. We did not expect the enemy to establish ambush sites or set out mines and booby traps in these areas that were believed to be only occupied by NVA troops. On several occasions we discovered enemy boot prints at stream and trail junctions but not along the trail routes that we were following. We wore issued jungle boots and altered our routes to avoid trails with damp and soft surfaces where our boots would have made an impression. This was difficult to achieve during night movement. An emergency extraction was necessary when Tyler became unconscious with a malaria fever. At the risk of compromising our location, we requested a single UH-1 to a small tree lined hilltop where we used a rope hoist secured to Tyler’s snap link to lift him from a rock to the skids of the hovering helicopter where the crew were able to grab and lift him onboard. After the aircraft departed, we moved quickly along a game trail down to a valley and up to another mountain ridge where we ‘lay-dogged’ until nightfall and then resumed our patrol as planned. We were able to zig-sag along our planned routes and complete the daily observation reports from the pre-selected observation points. Close enemy observation was only made on the last day of the patrol where we were to be extracted by two UH-1s from an area located in the northern limits of the patrol area. Eight NVA were found gathering firewood with their rifles leaning against one tree. That encounter will be described in a separate writing. We were extracted by two UH-1s from a LZ which we had occupied for an entire morning. The areas and trails leading into the LZ were reconned by different team members and we were certain that no enemy troops were within several miles. The UH-1s arrived mid-day and on time and we dove aboard the helicopters and returned to base camp where we requested and were given ice cream, milk and different meals while we prepared our combined de-briefing report that was given by Grimes to G-2 and other division staff late that afternoon. No other LRRP members accompanied him. When he returned, he informed us that everyone was surprised that we had not become lost since the other six teams had more difficulty navigating. When he and I were alone, he asked, “Would you like to dye your skin brown, put on black pajamas and parachute into North Vietnam?” “We have a chance to be the first ‘Sting-Ray’ team.”
A good beginning to my story? Opinions? I was having that dream again, the one with dad. We were in the car on our way to school, Michael sitting in the back seat singing along to the radio. I watched Dad drive, one hand holding the steering wheel loosely, the other tapping his knee in time with this week’s number one hit. He caught me looking and smiled at me, the dimples on his chin becoming more obvious. I’d inherited those dimples. Dad would always smile in this dream, right before it happened. Within seconds the smile was wiped off his face as a car smashed into us, everything seemed to happen in slow motion. Then everything went black, almost immediately followed by screams. Now in my Dream I would see Dad. Covered in blood, one deep cut on his head. He would walk towards me, one hand reaching out. He would always be smiling, but not the contagious smile I had grown up with. This smile was different, it was evil. Blood would then spill out of his mouth and he would crumple to his knees before he could reach me. At this point I would be unable to move or speak; I would only be able to watch my father die in front of me. He would look out at me, his eyes pleading for me to help but unable to say the words as blood bubbled out his mouth. Then he would say one word which would haunt me for the rest of my life. “Why?” I woke up, my bed drenched with sweat. Then I started to cry. Uncontrollable tears streaming down my face, landing in pools on my bed. I wanted dad to be here more than anything else in the world, to feel his strong arms around me, to hear his laugh, to see his smile. But that would never happen, he was dead and I would have to live with it. I would have to work out a way to forget my father, forget he ever existed. I let these horrible thoughts swim around in my head. Then my bedroom door opened. “Alex?” Michael whispered, stepping into view. He looked so innocent, something I had lost years ago. As I looked closer I could see he was crying. “Are you okay?” I asked pulling him onto my lap. “I saw dad again…” his voice trailed as he remembered. I pulled him closer, forming a protective ring around him with my arms. Michael had been there at the crash, seen everything I had seen. I rocked him on my lap, urging the thoughts to leave his head. “It’s okay, I know it’s hard…but dad’s watching us, you know? He may not be in heaven, but he’s somewhere.” I said, forcing myself to believe it too. There was a pause, an eerie silence. “You know that’s a lie,” Michael said gently. I froze, how did I respond to that? I didn’t know what to say, I just let Michaels statement hang in the air. “Why do you lie to me Alex? I’m only ten but not stupid, why does everyone think I’m so damn stupid?” His voice became high as anger built in him. He pushed himself away from me and walked out. Great, now everyone hated me. I started to cry again, I didn’t want to lose my baby brother too. I cried myself to sleep that night, something I’d gotten used to in the past months. This is just the beginning of my first chapter...do you like it? Its a rough draft so sorry if there are grammer errors and smelling mistakes...opinions please and constructive critisism!!! Oh im 13 btw.... This is just the beginning to my book: here is a synopsis of my book... That summer changed my life. For the better? I’m still not sure.Alex Coley had experienced love and its consequences. After her father died she never wanted to love somebody so much again. But when her mother took her and her brother on a surprise holiday her life changed. There she met the boy with the dancing eyes, the jet black hair and the dazzling smile. There, she discovered what love truly was. haha that is quite funny....sorry about my smelling mistakes...lol! ( tht was on purpose this time!)
